Case Study: Private Investment Fund

Develop and roll out of corporate strategy

The Context

I joined 23 Capital as the 3rd C-Suite hire. At the time, the company had 6 FTE’s one market and revenues under $1M. I developed a strategy that drove the company to scale to 4 markets globally, with over 70 FTE’s and significant revenue growth.

The Approach

I conducted both internal and external stakeholder interviews, in depth market research and multiple ideation sessions with management and functional specialists. From this process, a full strategy roadmap was identified and tied to key milestones, KPI’s and OKR’s that were central to 23 Capital’s growth. The following was delivered:

• Strategy bible outlining vision, product suite, target customer, pricing, value proposition and go-to-market
• Development of a 5-year business plan
• Implementation and design of OKR’s, KPI’s and key milestones across all functions
• Presentations of strategy bible to multiple lines of capital as key tool to raise debt and equity.

The Outcome

• Team clarity on group strategy improved from 42% to 75%

• Capital in excess of $2.5B was raised from multiple debt partners

• $20M was raised in equity from Soros and Corrum Capital and a term sheet from Blackstone Tactical Ops was secured for $350M.

• Revenues grew from <$1M to >$24M in 3.5 years.

Case Study: Global Mobility Provider

New business line identification and execution

The Context

In light of a planned IPO, my client was looking for new revenue sources and a means of strengthening their competitive advantage in the premium mobility market. I was hired to help identify adjacent growth opportunities and to execute and build services to capitalise on these opportunities.

The Approach

I used a strategic asset mapping process, identifying and weighing the companies core competencies against revenue potential and ease of execution of new service delivery. I went on to produce:

• A full business case reflecting the required investment, resource requirement, revenue, profit and return profile of the planned investment.
• A product roadmap connected to short, medium and long term OKR’s and KPI’s.
• Presentation to and engagement of entire management team to ensure stakeholder support and alignment.

The Outcome

A turnkey service platform was built where the client now has the capacity to offer vehicle leasing, insurance, maintenance and other benefits to its partners.  This new service platform will contribute c. 85% growth to core group revenue in the next 3 to 5 years.

Case Study: Publicly Listed Fashion Group

Investment in new venture & restructuring

The Context

My client was looking for new ways to grow and to build strategic capabilities (technology, execution, customers) through corporate venturing and early stage investing. They needed entrepreneurial expertise to help them run new ventures and decide how best to allocate capital within and between ventures. I was engaged to run all commercial aspects of the groups largest investment and advised the group more broadly on their corporate venturing strategy.

The Approach

I engaged with the board and senior management to define and develop a realistic business case (previous cases had been overly optimistic) that supported the ongoing investment into the venture and capital plan going forward.

• Definition of a 5-year business plan
• Articulate OKR’s, KPI’s and key milestones and communicate this to all stakeholders.
• Work with the board and investment committee to review capital plan
• Advise board on medium to longer term strategy (venture specific and more broadly).

The Outcome

I advised the board that the capital invested in this venture could be better allocated elsewhere in the group. This advice was acted on and I subsequently led the restructuring of the business alongside the Head of HR. We successfully placed c. 50 FTE’s into 3 other areas of the group avoiding resource duplication. This resulted in ~€10M of cost savings per annum for the group.
